The first data referring to the church is in a 1334 papal tithe listing, so it is probably the most precious, medieval monument of the Southern Great Plain. We are still not sure of the origins of these rotundas, the cause of their construction, their purpose, the identity, motivation and intention of their builders. There are three such churches in Europe, all in Hungary. They are similar ones only in the Caucasus. Behind the six-arm mapping, some seek sacred content, while others consider it a simple decorative tool. What we can surely know is that, in contrast to the established templates of contemporary temple building, builders have built a particularly eastern, Byzantine-style building, which had a Byzantine double cross at the top until the 19th century. Its uniqueness, besides its form, are the delicate frescoes and the gracefully tall half-columns decorated with life-tree motives. The rotunda was not destroyed by the Turks but used as a bath and a stable. The Circle Church was separated between 1980 and 1983 from the neo-Roman Catholic church built next to it in 1910. Presumably built at the beginning of the 13th century, The Circle Church, decorated with frescoes from 13th-14th century, after several centuries of rebuilding now welcomes visitors in its original condition.

Nandafalva was named after the Indian holy place, Nandagram. After more than twenty years of activity, the Hindu Temple was built in 2000. Based on the plans of architect Gyula Szigeti, a fusion of Hungarian and Hindu architectural features can be discovered, and the porch that evokes the buildings of the Great Plain encircles a tile-decorated Orissa tower. The traditional church architecture that is still alive in India does not shy away from blending the architecture of different regions. There is a hundredweight bell in the tower of the church, which follows the Hungarian tradition by being rung daily. The church is surrounded by red sandstone carvings, and the temple sanctuary depicts the most important figures of the Hindu pantheon. One of the monumental elements is the two-ton Humble Column, which is two meters high and carved from a stone. In 2013, on an open day, a cassette ceiling and a fresco were added, which took almost a year to finish. The fresco made by the painter Barbara Krasznai depicts the most important figures of the Hindu religion, the avatars.

Hungarian Tragedy 1944 Exhibition – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/magyar-tragedia-1944-kiallitohely-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/magyar-tragedia-1944-kiallitohely-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:02:48 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/magyar-tragedia-1944-kiallitohely-hodmezovasarhely/ On the plot belonging to the Synagogue, facing the facade of Szeremle Street, the building of the Jewish school was built in 1874, in an eclectic style. Until its nationalization is 1948, it operated as a denominational school. The former Jewish school was occupied by the Israelite religious church, and was used as a sermon room. In 2004, in parallel with the synagogue, the former school building was renovated, based on the plans of Attila F. Kovács. Hungary’s first permanent Holocaust exhibition in the country opened its doors on June 27, 2004. The exhibition commemorates the victims of Nazi genocide: the people the city lost during the labor service, in the concentration camps and in Auschwitz. The time of the synagogue stands at 10 hours and 10 minutes until today, marking the exact time the city’s 737 Jewish citizens were taken away. The research has a record of 470 Jewish martyrs, a quarter of whom were younger than 24 years old, so there is a separate exhibition dedicated to child victims. Visitors can see the survivors’ recollections while the exhibition also reminds us of the actions of those who have been helping the victims in the darkest hours of our history.

Zsinagóga – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/zsinagoga-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/zsinagoga-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:58:31 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/zsinagoga-hodmezovasarhely/ The first written records of the Jews settling in Hódmezővásárhely date back to the years 1748 and 1757, but the actual religious life could only begin around 1810 in the city. Naturally, in the first few years private houses doubled as sites of the ceremonies, but as the number of families grew, the need for a larger prayer house became apparent in the community. The first synagogue was built in 1834 by a house purchased from lawyer Sámuel Matók. In 1839, they also bought the neighboring plot where the school and the ritual bath were arranged. In the 1850s demand for a larger synagogue surfaced. Based on the works received for a design competition, Miklós Busch, master builder of Szentes, was commissioned to carry out design tasks. The facade of a synagogue, built in 1857 in a romantic style, was similar to a multi-storey house, so as not to look like a Christian church on the outside. During the period until the turn of the century, the number of Jews in Hódmezővásárhely increased tenfold. The city was at its golden age, with a significantly increased number of Jews, who had been strengthened economically, and who felt the time to build a new, more impressive synagogue had come. According to the first ideas, a completely new prayer house would have been created instead of the old one, but the designs received in 1906 did not appeal to the members of the jury. Finally, Miksa Müller was commissioned with preparing the plans for the reconstruction of the building. The most significant change during the reconstruction between 1906 and 1908 was the creation of the new main facade. The main facade, which is eclectic, but mostly composed of Art Nouveau decorations, gives the building a central effect. In fact, the facade bearing Moorish elements is a huge gate building that includes the foyer, along with the triple entrance. On 16 June 1944, the deportation of Jews from the city to Auschwitz and Strasshof began. Only five out of Auschwitz returned to Hódmezővásárhely. The synagogue was bought by the city from the community in 1984. Large scale renovations started in 1989, when the ornate glass windows, which were almost completely destroyed in the meantime, were renewed with the help of Julianna Kovács, Ferenczy prize-winning glass artist and her husband András Szilágyi. In 2004, the building underwent further renovations for the 60th anniversary of the Holocaust. It is rare that the Synagogue still retains its original equipment, the hand-carved benches remain in their original condition. We can see these restored in the synagogue today. In the former Jewish school next to the building there is a Holocaust Memorial Center, and the building also provides space for events alongside religious life.

Old Reformed Church – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/reformatus-otemplom/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/reformatus-otemplom/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:57:24 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/reformatus-otemplom/ The first mention of the Reformation in Hódmezővásárhely is related to a dispute in Szeged in 1545, on which Priest Mátyás of Vásárhely participated on the Protestant side. In the area of Vásárhely, during the initial period of the Reformation, the Lutheran line was in the majority, but from 1569 the cityhad a Calvinist pastor. During the Turkish occupation, the use of solid building materials was forbidden for defense reasons, so a church built of mud and wood served at the Reformed Church in Vásárhely. After the Turkish rule, the tower of the Reformed Church was built in 1713, making it the oldest brick building in the city. The Baroque-style nave was built between 1721 and 1723 in accordance with the architectural design of the tower, and was executed by János Hölbing, a builder from Buda. Although the furnishings and religious objects of the church had been removed earlier, the 2012 renovation made it possible to collect them and restore them to their original condition. Thus, the 18th century painted, wooden panel facade and ceiling, the pulpit crown, the priest’s bench and several artifacts returned after 113 years. Recently, it has been completely renovated.

Holy Trinity Church – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szentharomsag-templom-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szentharomsag-templom-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:56:08 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/szentharomsag-templom-hodmezovasarhely/ The history of the present parish started after the bishophood of St. Gellért, and in 1332 its existence is mentioned in documents, but the number of Catholics in Calvinist Hódmezővásárhely was little in the 18th century. Although several churches were erected using pise in the decades following the Turkish occupation, they became destroyed. Their first solid brick church was built between 1752 and 1758 in Baroque style. After more Catholics settled in the city in 1860, transepts were added according to the plans of Miklós Ybl. Above the main entrance is the coat of arms of the Count Károlyi family. Today’s main altar was bought in 1873 at the Vienna World Expo. The original Trinity image was restored in 1954. The painted statues of Saint Stephen and Saint Imre were created by János Inzám. The church’s attractions include the two confessional booths mad from scrubbed oak wood, and Johannes Lieberich’s masterpieces, the early Louis Seize style silver navicula and incense from 1803. The 18th century candleholders are made of gilded hardwood. The liturgical layout was created in 1967, the exterior and interior restoration took place in 1975 and 1978.

Fortified Roman Catholic Church – Óföldeák https://palmculture.eu/en/places/romai-katolikus-erodtemplom-ofoldeak/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/romai-katolikus-erodtemplom-ofoldeak/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:52:59 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/romai-katolikus-erodtemplom-ofoldeak/ Óföldeák Árpád-kori eredetű falu, először az 1332/33-as pápai tizedjegyzék említi, eszerint már akkor egyházas hely volt. A ma is álló templom magja valószínűleg a 15. század második felében épült. A település 1950-ben Óföldeák néven önállósult. 1990-99 között Béres Mária vezetésével nagyobb arányú műemléki régészeti kutatásokra került sor, majd következett a helyreállítás, állagmegóvás. Az üvegablakokat Szilágyi András tervei alapján pótolták.

Its best-known exhibition is Árpád Feszty’s panorama painting titled The arrival of the Hungarians in the Rotunda. In making the 120 meter long, 15 meter high panoramic scene with a 38 meter diameter, Árpád Feszty was assisted by several painters for two years, from 1892 to 1894: landscape details were created by László Mednyánszky, the horse battle scenes by Pál Vágó. In 2013, discovered parts of the 1897 Polish-owned Transylvanian panorama were also exhibited. The Open-Air Ethnographic Collection has 19 building complexes and three open-air exhibitions, its design began in 1978 and continues to evolve ever since. The buildings represent the different regions of the country, the visitor can observe the life of the 19th century villages and farmsteads, the various crafts, see the school, the post office, the grocery store, the windmill, the narrow-gauge railway, the bakery. Here you can also see a collection of carts and a collection of agricultural machines. The larch pavilion resembling a yurt houses the Forest and Man exhibition, presenting the relationship between forest, trees and man. The nomadic park evokes the world of Eurasian steppes, with yurt and winter accommodations, horse shows. The Water Exhibition commemorates rafting, wood processing, shipbuilding and fishing. With the help of a model, we can witness the great flood of 1879 in Szeged. There are several monuments in the park, as well as a forest trail, a forest pitch and playgrounds also await discovery.

The cultural work of the institution had diminished for some time due to the frequent conscriptions of soldiers and the buffet in the house, which began to take on the character of a shot and beer joint with dance events. It was at that time that the public gave it the name Kapca meaning a piece of cloth used in boots, but also slang for a worthless person. In 1999 he came under the authority of the parish and, under the name of Alsóvárosi Kultúrház, and served as a community house for the parish, as well as for organizing cultural activities, workshops, concerts and performances. The Kapca Café-Bistro was opened in 2013, focusing mainly on new-wave street gastronomy, and is one of the pioneers of quality street food restaurants with a selection of craft beers.
