With regular live music, a Mexican cuisine that was then a novelty and the good company soon made it a venue for many. Over the years, a slow but persistent process of transformation started, which did not necessarily was of advantage to the place. The change of ownership in 2008 put the small pub back on the live music map. Around a hundred concerts a year are organized in the club filled with old furnishings, and in summer there is also a garden waiting for the fans of the alternative genres, among which jazz dominates, but metal, folk and electronics comfortably fit in here as well. Animal friendly place.

A megújult, 353 férőhelyes terem méltó helyszíne a színházi előadásoknak, akusztikája miatt kitűnő koncertterem és konferenciáknak is otthont adó többfunkciós térré vált.

The cinema, barely surviving the decline in the 2000s, found new owners in 2013 who completely renovated it and rendered it fit for 3D projection. Currently, the expansion of the cinema with a new room is underway.

Its best-known exhibition is Árpád Feszty’s panorama painting titled The arrival of the Hungarians in the Rotunda. In making the 120 meter long, 15 meter high panoramic scene with a 38 meter diameter, Árpád Feszty was assisted by several painters for two years, from 1892 to 1894: landscape details were created by László Mednyánszky, the horse battle scenes by Pál Vágó. In 2013, discovered parts of the 1897 Polish-owned Transylvanian panorama were also exhibited. The Open-Air Ethnographic Collection has 19 building complexes and three open-air exhibitions, its design began in 1978 and continues to evolve ever since. The buildings represent the different regions of the country, the visitor can observe the life of the 19th century villages and farmsteads, the various crafts, see the school, the post office, the grocery store, the windmill, the narrow-gauge railway, the bakery. Here you can also see a collection of carts and a collection of agricultural machines. The larch pavilion resembling a yurt houses the Forest and Man exhibition, presenting the relationship between forest, trees and man. The nomadic park evokes the world of Eurasian steppes, with yurt and winter accommodations, horse shows. The Water Exhibition commemorates rafting, wood processing, shipbuilding and fishing. With the help of a model, we can witness the great flood of 1879 in Szeged. There are several monuments in the park, as well as a forest trail, a forest pitch and playgrounds also await discovery.

Szeged Zoo https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szegedi-vadaspark/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szegedi-vadaspark/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:41:54 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/szegedi-vadaspark/ Szeged Zook is one of the youngest and largest zoos in Hungary. Specializing in rare, endangered species, the park is particularly prominent for its collection of South American animals. In the 1960s, the idea of establishing a zoo emerged in Szeged. The traditions and great history of training of biologists in the city’s higher education institutions has only further strengthened the demand, which, however, remained only for a long time at plan level. The sites in question were the free area between the Botanical Garden and the Tisza, the Liget (Park) of Újszeged, and the area of the Sancer Lakes. In the end, the process of establishing the zoo began in the latter area in the eighties – without official permission – in social work. Students, university teachers created a paddock in the area where deers and wild boars were kept. Finally, on December 5, 1985, a decision was made by the City Council of Szeged to formally establish the institution as part of the Amusement Park. The decision was not followed by action, and virtually without any money, construction was started with materials provided from social work, demolitions, companies and schools. In 1985, the animal collection consisted of only 3 monkeys, a few roe deer and wild boar and a giant snake. From January 1, 1989, the Zoo became an independent institution, and on May 28th of the same year it officially opened its doors with a 3-4 hectare show. The relatively poor livestock rapidly expanded, with the presentation of extremely rare, endangered animals, grouped by geographical distribution becoming the goal. The modern approach at that time enabled the Zoo to quickly join the blood circulation of international zoos. Education, as one of the main tasks of modern zoos, has also been emphasized from the outset. The institution was designated by the Minister of Nature Conservation in 1993 as a Nature Conservation Education Centre. As a result of continuous development and expansion, the 45 hectare area of the Wildlife Park is currently divided into African, Asian, Australian, European and South American areas, with countless species, many of which can only be seen here in Hungary, showing outstanding performance in nature conservation and species preservation.

Dugonics Square https://palmculture.eu/en/places/dugonics-ter/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/dugonics-ter/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:38:48 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/dugonics-ter/ In old Szeged, Dugonics Square was the home of the wheat market before the destruction of the great flood of 1879. The square was named after the author of the first Hungarian novel, András Dugonics, a piarist-priest teacher, who created many expressions of the Hungarian mathematical language. The statue on the square, set up from public donation, was the first public sculpture in Szeged. In front of it, the musical fountain built for the centenary of the great flood in 1979 is one of the favorite meeting places of the Szeged people. The main building of the University of Szeged is located in the center of the square, the early eclectic palace was originally built as a high school. In front of it stands the statue of Attila József, who was a student of the institution between 1924 and 1925, but had to interrupt his studies because of a rebellious poem.

Széchenyi Square https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szechenyi-ter/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szechenyi-ter/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:37:42 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/szechenyi-ter/ The western walls of the castle of Szeged, built in the 13th century on the bank of the Tisza, stood on what is Széchenyi Square today, and the barren area in front of them served as a practice area for the castle defense and as the Main Market Square. While the castle was standing, the military headquarters banned planting trees to prevent the large plants from obstructing the free view. After the Turkish occupation, when Szeged regained its former rights and its rank of a royal city, the centre for public legislation, the City Hall, was built here as well. In 1860, after the death of Széchenyi, the city administration decided to name it the Greatest Hungarian. According to one of the anecdotes of Ferenc Móra, when Széchenyi visited Szeged in 1833, he was so desperate to see the main market that he suggested to the then mayor that they should grow potatoes if they were unable to renew the public space. The 19th century finally transformed the space both in appearance and function: large palaces were built on its southern side, and as part of the reconstruction after the great flood of 1879, the castle walls were demolished, eclectic residential and public buildings were erected in their places and a park was created. Spacious, over 50,000 square meters in size, it is decorated with centuries-old sycamore trees, magnolias that are popular when flowering, empress trees and many other special plants. Among the plants we find statues depicting the dominant figures of the city and the history of the country.

Szeged Bridge Fair, Downtown Bridge https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szegedi-hidivasar-belvarosi-hid/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szegedi-hidivasar-belvarosi-hid/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:35:14 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/szegedi-hidivasar-belvarosi-hid/ One of the largest artisan fairs in the country, Hídivásár, which is related to the Szeged Day series of events, was invented and organized for the first time in 1999 by the Ördögszekér Bt, celebrating the reacquisition of Szeged’s city status in 1719. Since then, the fair, held every year, has become a tradition in the life of the city, its initial success has been maintained ever since. With the addition of the Wine Festival and the festive programs taking place in several locations in the city, the Szeged Day festivities have grown into more than a week of events, but one of its highlights is still the Bridge Fair crowd.

SZIN, The Youth Days of Szeged (Free Beach) https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szin-szegedi-ifjusagi-napok-partfurdo/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szin-szegedi-ifjusagi-napok-partfurdo/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:31:16 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/szin-szegedi-ifjusagi-napok-partfurdo/ The first youth days were organized in 1968 with the support of KISZ (Communist Youth Association). In the first year it was called a carnival and the concerts were organized in front of the town hall. The Carnival went through the whole city, and local companies also joined in the parade, promoting their products. The large number of participants made it clear that there was a great need for the event, so the event was moved to the bank of the river Tisza. At the carnival, the large factories of that time decorated their trucks with their products and paraded them through the city, with thousands of people waiting for them on the quay. The festival later expanded to three stages, concerts were held in front of the stairs of the Ferenc Móra Museum, Dugonics Square and the riverbank. Due to its inexpensiveness, it was also called a sneaker festival in the 1980s, and festivalers often slept in public places of the city. This period ended in 1989, and the change of regime resulted in the festival being abandoned. From 1990 to 2002, Zsolt Szurdi and the City Rock Club of Szeged held the festival’s spirit alive, typically free of charge, even without subsidies. The rights went to the city in 2002, and now the IH Event Center organizes the festival, which has found it’s permament location on the free beach. In addition to one or two foreign performers, the festival hosts the mainstream Hungarian line-up, but its location is the highlight of the event. The festival area is practically in the middle of the city, on the waterfront, in a beach area, and the city center is a 5-minute walk away.
