For the design of the building, a tender was opened in 1911, which was open only to architects living in Szeged. The criterion of the tender determined that the building should have “serious” style features, the Art Nouveau style was to be ignored. Nine entries were submitted for the competition, the first prize of which was won by a plan from architects’ István Ottovay and Imre Winkler. Béla Ligeti was responsible for the construction work. The construction began on July 13, 1911, and the building was completed at a staggered pace of work in one year on August 1, 1912. In the course of landscaping, the entire natural lake previously occupying the site has been filled up, with the József Attila Science and Information Center standing in its place now.

In 1925, the Faculty of Humanities occupied the third floor of the building. The Geographic Institute took over part of the first floor. On the ground floor, the Institute of Zootaxy and the Dental Clinic were located. The corridors of the building have not always been filled with bustling student life, their original owner was the Hungarian Railway, relocated to Szeged in 1887, which had hundreds of employees.

Sándor Sík held his literary history lectures in the Great Hall of the Faculty of Humanities between 1930 and 1944. At the same time several famous Hungarian writers spoke to their numerous audience, including Gyula Illyés, László Németh and Péter Veres. Another famous student of the Faculty of Humanities was Miklós Radnóti, a distinguished poet between 1930 and 1935.

Jazz Kocsma https://palmculture.eu/en/places/jazz-kocsma/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/jazz-kocsma/#respond Wed, 23 Jan 2019 16:11:40 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/?post_type=places&p=5874 At the time of its opening in 1992, the Jazz Kocsma was one of the forerunners of the new-minded, typically underground music institutions. With regular live music, a Mexican cuisine that was then a novelty and the good company soon made it a venue for many. Over the years, a slow but persistent process of transformation started, which did not necessarily was of advantage to the place. The change of ownership in 2008 put the small pub back on the live music map. Around a hundred concerts a year are organized in the club filled with old furnishings, and in summer there is also a garden waiting for the fans of the alternative genres, among which jazz dominates, but metal, folk and electronics comfortably fit in here as well. Animal friendly place.

Rotunda – Kiszombor https://palmculture.eu/en/places/rotunda-kiszombor/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/rotunda-kiszombor/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:13:09 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/?post_type=places&p=4961 The Rotunda is a unique, Roman-era architectural work with 14th century Gothic frescoes. The first data referring to the church is in a 1334 papal tithe listing, so it is probably the most precious, medieval monument of the Southern Great Plain. We are still not sure of the origins of these rotundas, the cause of their construction, their purpose, the identity, motivation and intention of their builders. There are three such churches in Europe, all in Hungary. They are similar ones only in the Caucasus. Behind the six-arm mapping, some seek sacred content, while others consider it a simple decorative tool. What we can surely know is that, in contrast to the established templates of contemporary temple building, builders have built a particularly eastern, Byzantine-style building, which had a Byzantine double cross at the top until the 19th century. Its uniqueness, besides its form, are the delicate frescoes and the gracefully tall half-columns decorated with life-tree motives. The rotunda was not destroyed by the Turks but used as a bath and a stable. The Circle Church was separated between 1980 and 1983 from the neo-Roman Catholic church built next to it in 1910. Presumably built at the beginning of the 13th century, The Circle Church, decorated with frescoes from 13th-14th century, after several centuries of rebuilding now welcomes visitors in its original condition.

The cultivation and processing of paprika in Szeged and its surroundings created traditions, typical professions related to Szeged, and at the end of the 19th century, the ground spice paprika of Szeged became the country’s sought-after export article. The word paprika was developed in the Szeged region, but it is known and used by many languages. The aim of the exhibition is to commemorate the families of paprika families around Szeged who have created the reputation of the Hungarian paprika. Paprika Park presents the origin, varieties, traditional and modern processing of paprika and their tools, as well as the use and values of paprika, the paprika traditions of the region, and the new ways of research and growing. Interested visitors can also view the operating plant. The exhibition can be visited with guided tours, even on weekends with prior appointment, and guided tours are provided in Hungarian and English. The texts in the paprika museum are in Hungarian, English and German.

Nandafalva Hindu Temple – Balástya https://palmculture.eu/en/places/nandafalva-hindu-templom-balastya/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/nandafalva-hindu-templom-balastya/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:09:11 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/nandafalva-hindu-templom-balastya/ The Nandafalva Hindu community was created in 1979 by some young people dedicated to ancient Hindu teachings in the farmstead of Balástya. Nandafalva was named after the Indian holy place, Nandagram. After more than twenty years of activity, the Hindu Temple was built in 2000. Based on the plans of architect Gyula Szigeti, a fusion of Hungarian and Hindu architectural features can be discovered, and the porch that evokes the buildings of the Great Plain encircles a tile-decorated Orissa tower. The traditional church architecture that is still alive in India does not shy away from blending the architecture of different regions. There is a hundredweight bell in the tower of the church, which follows the Hungarian tradition by being rung daily. The church is surrounded by red sandstone carvings, and the temple sanctuary depicts the most important figures of the Hindu pantheon. One of the monumental elements is the two-ton Humble Column, which is two meters high and carved from a stone. In 2013, on an open day, a cassette ceiling and a fresco were added, which took almost a year to finish. The fresco made by the painter Barbara Krasznai depicts the most important figures of the Hindu religion, the avatars.

Cellar Museum – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/pincemuzeum-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/pincemuzeum-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:08:03 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/pincemuzeum-hodmezovasarhely/ In 2003, the Museum of Old Peasant Tools was opened, located in the cellar of the Agrárcentrum’s Petőfi Street building. Creators of the permanent exhibition planned to create a small museum that introduces accessories of peasant life. The city administration supported their idea, renovated the cellar, and the old bricks on the floor were also provided by the city. The exhibition was compiled by Vera Nagy, the chief museologist of Tornyai János Museum, with Nándor Nagy, a restorer, also contributing to the work. Ninety percent of the objects come from the private collection of János Perényi, the rest being made available to the museum by the members of the association. Here we can see corn crushers, carrot-cutters, sprayers, shredders, and various hand tools, but there are also some accessories for winemaking and pig slaying.

Alföldi Gallery (Old High School) – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/alfoldi-galeria-ogimnazium-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/alfoldi-galeria-ogimnazium-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:07:10 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/alfoldi-galeria-ogimnazium-hodmezovasarhely/ The building the Alföldi Galéria currently occupies is the classicist building of the former Reformed High School. In 1882-1883, it was expanded to the west in its original style. In the rebuilding of 1897, the bell tower decorating the building was demolished. This is when it got the name Old High School, due to the construction of the new high school building. In the 1960s, the idea of building a stand-alone gallery for the wide-ranging exhibition of fine art in the region of Vásárhely and the Great Plain emerged. The Alföld Gallery was opened to the public on September 30, 1985 in the renovated upstairs chambers, empty since the end of the 1970s. The ground floor rooms were opened in 2003 by the city during the 50th Vásárhely Autumn Exhibition. Since 2006, the whole building has been serving the purpose of the Gallery. The art exhibition of the Great Plain was opened in 2013 in the upstairs halls of the Alföldi Gallery from the very beginning.

Point of Remembrance – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/emlekpont-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/emlekpont-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:06:18 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/emlekpont-hodmezovasarhely/ Az 1924-ben épült épület eredeti építtetője és tulajdonosa ifj. A kiállítást, hódmezővásárhelyi levéltárosok, helytörténészek aktív közreműködésével, a Terror Háza Múzeum munkatársai alkották. Az összes anyag összegyűltével és az épület műszaki átadásával 2006 júliusában nyílt meg a múzeum.

Hungarian Tragedy 1944 Exhibition – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/magyar-tragedia-1944-kiallitohely-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/magyar-tragedia-1944-kiallitohely-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:02:48 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/magyar-tragedia-1944-kiallitohely-hodmezovasarhely/ On the plot belonging to the Synagogue, facing the facade of Szeremle Street, the building of the Jewish school was built in 1874, in an eclectic style. Until its nationalization is 1948, it operated as a denominational school. The former Jewish school was occupied by the Israelite religious church, and was used as a sermon room. In 2004, in parallel with the synagogue, the former school building was renovated, based on the plans of Attila F. Kovács. Hungary’s first permanent Holocaust exhibition in the country opened its doors on June 27, 2004. The exhibition commemorates the victims of Nazi genocide: the people the city lost during the labor service, in the concentration camps and in Auschwitz. The time of the synagogue stands at 10 hours and 10 minutes until today, marking the exact time the city’s 737 Jewish citizens were taken away. The research has a record of 470 Jewish martyrs, a quarter of whom were younger than 24 years old, so there is a separate exhibition dedicated to child victims. Visitors can see the survivors’ recollections while the exhibition also reminds us of the actions of those who have been helping the victims in the darkest hours of our history.
