For the design of the building, a tender was opened in 1911, which was open only to architects living in Szeged. The criterion of the tender determined that the building should have “serious” style features, the Art Nouveau style was to be ignored. Nine entries were submitted for the competition, the first prize of which was won by a plan from architects’ István Ottovay and Imre Winkler. Béla Ligeti was responsible for the construction work. The construction began on July 13, 1911, and the building was completed at a staggered pace of work in one year on August 1, 1912. In the course of landscaping, the entire natural lake previously occupying the site has been filled up, with the József Attila Science and Information Center standing in its place now.

In 1925, the Faculty of Humanities occupied the third floor of the building. The Geographic Institute took over part of the first floor. On the ground floor, the Institute of Zootaxy and the Dental Clinic were located. The corridors of the building have not always been filled with bustling student life, their original owner was the Hungarian Railway, relocated to Szeged in 1887, which had hundreds of employees.

Sándor Sík held his literary history lectures in the Great Hall of the Faculty of Humanities between 1930 and 1944. At the same time several famous Hungarian writers spoke to their numerous audience, including Gyula Illyés, László Németh and Péter Veres. Another famous student of the Faculty of Humanities was Miklós Radnóti, a distinguished poet between 1930 and 1935.

The church is located right next to the Gerliczy Castle, which is currently operating as a lung sanatorium. The most ornate temple in the Torontál area, keeping the most beautiful traditions in its proportions and decorations, has magnificent furnishings, its altar, pulpit, carved Stations of the Cross, and a magnificent rose window are richly decorated. The dark brown main altar is a real winged altar, evoking the Middle Ages.

János Tornyai Museum – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/tornyai-janos-muzeum-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/tornyai-janos-muzeum-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:01:38 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/tornyai-janos-muzeum-hodmezovasarhely/ The history of János Tornyai Museum goes back more than a hundred years, and it presents extremely rich archeological, ethnographic, local history, art and craft works of Hódmezővásárhely and its area. The city council of Hódmezővásárhely decided to establish the museum in 1905. Today’s museum buiéding was purchased from state aid in 1914, but it housed several institutions, and the museum became an independent institution only in 1946. In 1951 it took the name of one of the most prominent artists of Hódmezővásárhely, János Tornyai. In 2007, the Tornyai János Museum and Cultural Center, the public collection, public education and library organization of the city was established. Its headquarters is the János Tornyai Museum, and is maintained by the Municipality of Hódmezővásárhely. The museum also houses several permanent exhibitions. The permanent archaeological exhibition, Everyday Venuses takes us back to the everyday life of the man of the Neolithic. The exhibition focuses on three main topics: the life of a Neolithic village, the beliefs of the Tisza culture, and the late Neolithic bulrush and textile industry. In addition to the archaeological exhibition, a permanent exhibition of urban history, called Centuries on the shore of Hód Lake – From Houd to Újváros, opened in December 2018. The exhibition shows the development of the settlement from the age of Árpád to the fire of Kis Street, which destroyed over 1,000 houses. In addition to the archaeological finds and reconstructions exhibited, digital devices are also used to discover the history of Hódmezővásárhely. The ethnographic part of the exhibition also gives an idea of the development of the farm system around the city. Part of the permanent exhibitions is the Spectacle Warehouse, which features more than 1,500 archaeological, local history, ethnography, and fine art materials, located in the basement level of the museum. In the fifty-two showcases, only 1% of the museum’s entire collection is lined up in chronological, periodical, and object groups.

Hagymatikum Thermal Bath – Makó https://palmculture.eu/en/places/hagymatikum-mako/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/hagymatikum-mako/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:49:33 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/hagymatikum-mako/ Makó Thermal and Medicinal Spa (Hagymatikum) is a spa complex with experience, spa and wellness facilities in the heart of downtown, the most important tourist attraction of Makó. The water was first brought to the surface from thermal spring in 1956, and was serviced by a building five years later, which in the first years served purely hygienic purposes, commonly referred to as the public basin. From 993 meters deep well, 41 ° C alkaline bicarbonate water flows. After the change of regime, the bath was gradually transformed, first the medical department was built, and from the 2000s the city administration has considered the expansion of the spa with aqua park elements, from which the increase in the number of guestsand the introduction of tourism were expected. The largest part of the organic building complex, which was completed in January 2012, was designed by Imre Makovecz, while the training pool of 2007 is the work of his student, Lőrinc Csernyus.

Szeged Zoo https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szegedi-vadaspark/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szegedi-vadaspark/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:41:54 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/szegedi-vadaspark/ Szeged Zook is one of the youngest and largest zoos in Hungary. Specializing in rare, endangered species, the park is particularly prominent for its collection of South American animals. In the 1960s, the idea of establishing a zoo emerged in Szeged. The traditions and great history of training of biologists in the city’s higher education institutions has only further strengthened the demand, which, however, remained only for a long time at plan level. The sites in question were the free area between the Botanical Garden and the Tisza, the Liget (Park) of Újszeged, and the area of the Sancer Lakes. In the end, the process of establishing the zoo began in the latter area in the eighties – without official permission – in social work. Students, university teachers created a paddock in the area where deers and wild boars were kept. Finally, on December 5, 1985, a decision was made by the City Council of Szeged to formally establish the institution as part of the Amusement Park. The decision was not followed by action, and virtually without any money, construction was started with materials provided from social work, demolitions, companies and schools. In 1985, the animal collection consisted of only 3 monkeys, a few roe deer and wild boar and a giant snake. From January 1, 1989, the Zoo became an independent institution, and on May 28th of the same year it officially opened its doors with a 3-4 hectare show. The relatively poor livestock rapidly expanded, with the presentation of extremely rare, endangered animals, grouped by geographical distribution becoming the goal. The modern approach at that time enabled the Zoo to quickly join the blood circulation of international zoos. Education, as one of the main tasks of modern zoos, has also been emphasized from the outset. The institution was designated by the Minister of Nature Conservation in 1993 as a Nature Conservation Education Centre. As a result of continuous development and expansion, the 45 hectare area of the Wildlife Park is currently divided into African, Asian, Australian, European and South American areas, with countless species, many of which can only be seen here in Hungary, showing outstanding performance in nature conservation and species preservation.

Dugonics Square https://palmculture.eu/en/places/dugonics-ter/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/dugonics-ter/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:38:48 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/dugonics-ter/ In old Szeged, Dugonics Square was the home of the wheat market before the destruction of the great flood of 1879. The square was named after the author of the first Hungarian novel, András Dugonics, a piarist-priest teacher, who created many expressions of the Hungarian mathematical language. The statue on the square, set up from public donation, was the first public sculpture in Szeged. In front of it, the musical fountain built for the centenary of the great flood in 1979 is one of the favorite meeting places of the Szeged people. The main building of the University of Szeged is located in the center of the square, the early eclectic palace was originally built as a high school. In front of it stands the statue of Attila József, who was a student of the institution between 1924 and 1925, but had to interrupt his studies because of a rebellious poem.

Széchenyi Square https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szechenyi-ter/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szechenyi-ter/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:37:42 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/szechenyi-ter/ The western walls of the castle of Szeged, built in the 13th century on the bank of the Tisza, stood on what is Széchenyi Square today, and the barren area in front of them served as a practice area for the castle defense and as the Main Market Square. While the castle was standing, the military headquarters banned planting trees to prevent the large plants from obstructing the free view. After the Turkish occupation, when Szeged regained its former rights and its rank of a royal city, the centre for public legislation, the City Hall, was built here as well. In 1860, after the death of Széchenyi, the city administration decided to name it the Greatest Hungarian. According to one of the anecdotes of Ferenc Móra, when Széchenyi visited Szeged in 1833, he was so desperate to see the main market that he suggested to the then mayor that they should grow potatoes if they were unable to renew the public space. The 19th century finally transformed the space both in appearance and function: large palaces were built on its southern side, and as part of the reconstruction after the great flood of 1879, the castle walls were demolished, eclectic residential and public buildings were erected in their places and a park was created. Spacious, over 50,000 square meters in size, it is decorated with centuries-old sycamore trees, magnolias that are popular when flowering, empress trees and many other special plants. Among the plants we find statues depicting the dominant figures of the city and the history of the country.

Hági Courtyard https://palmculture.eu/en/places/hagi-udvar/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/hagi-udvar/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:22:06 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/hagi-udvar/ There is a commemorative plaque announcing that the first permanent theater in Szeged was opened in 1856, partly where now the Hági Udvar stands. With the completion of today’s theater (1883) the wooden building became obsolete and was demolished. The reputable Hági belongs among the revitalizing constructions following the great flood of Szeged. In 1890, Henrik Haggenmacher, a brewer from Budapest, bought the plot to build a beer hall and warehouse. On the 1st of February, 1896, the elegantly decorated beer hall was opened, where besides fresh beers the selected dishes of Hungarian cuisine were served. Later, the brewery moved out of its place, allowing for further expansion. The restaurant had several tenants, and in 1923 Rezső Gottwald bought the restaurant, at that time already nicknamed Hági, after its owner. After the state-owned decades, the legendary place was closed on the last day of 1997, and after a long break in 2018 it reopened again as the Hági Udvar.

University of Szeged, Faculty of Music https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szegedi-tudomanyegyetem-zenemuveszeti-kar/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szegedi-tudomanyegyetem-zenemuveszeti-kar/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:02:43 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/szegedi-tudomanyegyetem-zenemuveszeti-kar/ Alongside the reconstruction following the 1879 flood disaster, music education in Szeged began to develop rapidly. In 1880, composer Viktor Langer founded the Town School of Music, which was led by Endre Szögi musician and composer from 1883 to 1903. In 1904 the Town School of Music invited the distinguished musician, Péter Király-König, who became a leading figure in the musical life of Szeged for decades, thanks to his musical and organizer skills, amking the school one of the most progressive ones outside Budapest, and the school taught men of excellence, such as composer Jenő Huszka or conductor Antal Fleischer. Thanks to the operation of the institution, the city’s musical life had also been revived, the City Music organized four concerts a year. From 1903 there was a serious lack of space, as the number of students at that time was over 400. In 1911, pre-work for a planned music palace began, but the construction was prevented by the war. The city council moved the school to the top floor of Tukats House on the Tisza Lajos Boulevard. Under Kuno Klebelsberg as Minister of Culture (1922-1931) enormous university investments were made in Szeged, which unfortunately did not go hand in hand with the development of music education infrastructure. Thus, the construction of a music palace that had been planned for decades had not taken place. In 1946, the city established the Szeged Music Conservatory, and for some time it seemed that the conservatory will be awarded a college rank, but the decree on state music consercatorys intervened a year later, thus creating the Szeged State Conservatory. The graduates of the Conservatory could only obtain a diploma in arts or teaching with the completion of the Budapest Academy of Music. With the separation of base-level training, the conservatory was transformed into a vocational school in 1953 under the name State Vocational School of Music of Szeged. In 1966, vocational school education and music teacher training were separated in five music schools of the country, the latter being raised to the rank of college by the Ministry of Culture. The official name of the Szeged institution became the Szeged Division of the Teacher Training Institute of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. In 1998, the Conservatory detached itself from the Academy of Music and was a founding member of the Szeged Higher Education Association until 1 January 2000. At that time, it became an independent, faculty-level unit of education of the freshly integrated University of Szeged. Following a successful faculty accreditation, as of September 1, 2003, it is the 11th Faculty of the University of Szeged, training artists and teachers on college level, and performers and artist teachers at university level. The long-deserved renovation of the building is planned to begin soon.

Szeged Lutheran Church https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szegedi-evangelikus-egyhazkozseg-temploma/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szegedi-evangelikus-egyhazkozseg-temploma/#respond Mon, 14 Jan 2019 17:56:31 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/szegedi-evangelikus-egyhazkozseg-temploma/ Protestantism appeared in Szeged during the first half of the 16th century, with worship taking place at private homes first. Afterwards, the community was allowed by the occupying Ottomans to use the St Mary Major Church in turn with the Catholics. After the 1552 Ottoman Campaign and the failed attempt at liberating Hungary, this opportunity and tolerance ceased to be, along with the presence of Lutherans in Szeged. The first mention of a Lutheran citizen – an iron merchant named Mihály Schreiner – was in 1805, but by 1855, there was a considerable community at the city. In 1859, the Lutherans bought buildings, and built schools and places of worship. The main chapel, located close to where the church is today, was dedicated on December 2, 1860. The Great Flood of 1879 demolished the building, but a new, Neo-Roman complex was designed by Frigyes Schulek shortly afterwards, and built with considerable international aid from, Germany, The Netherlands, Norway and the United States. The new church was dedicated on May 21, 1882, by Vicar Gusztáv Szeberényi. The foundations of the building had to be repaired a hundred years later. There were plans for another, larger church in the 1930s, but this was never realized due to the subsequent breakout of World War II.
