Point of Remembrance – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/emlekpont-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/emlekpont-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:06:18 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/emlekpont-hodmezovasarhely/ Az 1924-ben épült épület eredeti építtetője és tulajdonosa ifj. A kiállítást, hódmezővásárhelyi levéltárosok, helytörténészek aktív közreműködésével, a Terror Háza Múzeum munkatársai alkották. Az összes anyag összegyűltével és az épület műszaki átadásával 2006 júliusában nyílt meg a múzeum.

Hungarian Tragedy 1944 Exhibition – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/magyar-tragedia-1944-kiallitohely-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/magyar-tragedia-1944-kiallitohely-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:02:48 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/magyar-tragedia-1944-kiallitohely-hodmezovasarhely/ On the plot belonging to the Synagogue, facing the facade of Szeremle Street, the building of the Jewish school was built in 1874, in an eclectic style. Until its nationalization is 1948, it operated as a denominational school. The former Jewish school was occupied by the Israelite religious church, and was used as a sermon room. In 2004, in parallel with the synagogue, the former school building was renovated, based on the plans of Attila F. Kovács. Hungary’s first permanent Holocaust exhibition in the country opened its doors on June 27, 2004. The exhibition commemorates the victims of Nazi genocide: the people the city lost during the labor service, in the concentration camps and in Auschwitz. The time of the synagogue stands at 10 hours and 10 minutes until today, marking the exact time the city’s 737 Jewish citizens were taken away. The research has a record of 470 Jewish martyrs, a quarter of whom were younger than 24 years old, so there is a separate exhibition dedicated to child victims. Visitors can see the survivors’ recollections while the exhibition also reminds us of the actions of those who have been helping the victims in the darkest hours of our history.

Zsinagóga – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/zsinagoga-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/zsinagoga-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:58:31 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/zsinagoga-hodmezovasarhely/ The first written records of the Jews settling in Hódmezővásárhely date back to the years 1748 and 1757, but the actual religious life could only begin around 1810 in the city. Naturally, in the first few years private houses doubled as sites of the ceremonies, but as the number of families grew, the need for a larger prayer house became apparent in the community. The first synagogue was built in 1834 by a house purchased from lawyer Sámuel Matók. In 1839, they also bought the neighboring plot where the school and the ritual bath were arranged. In the 1850s demand for a larger synagogue surfaced. Based on the works received for a design competition, Miklós Busch, master builder of Szentes, was commissioned to carry out design tasks. The facade of a synagogue, built in 1857 in a romantic style, was similar to a multi-storey house, so as not to look like a Christian church on the outside. During the period until the turn of the century, the number of Jews in Hódmezővásárhely increased tenfold. The city was at its golden age, with a significantly increased number of Jews, who had been strengthened economically, and who felt the time to build a new, more impressive synagogue had come. According to the first ideas, a completely new prayer house would have been created instead of the old one, but the designs received in 1906 did not appeal to the members of the jury. Finally, Miksa Müller was commissioned with preparing the plans for the reconstruction of the building. The most significant change during the reconstruction between 1906 and 1908 was the creation of the new main facade. The main facade, which is eclectic, but mostly composed of Art Nouveau decorations, gives the building a central effect. In fact, the facade bearing Moorish elements is a huge gate building that includes the foyer, along with the triple entrance. On 16 June 1944, the deportation of Jews from the city to Auschwitz and Strasshof began. Only five out of Auschwitz returned to Hódmezővásárhely. The synagogue was bought by the city from the community in 1984. Large scale renovations started in 1989, when the ornate glass windows, which were almost completely destroyed in the meantime, were renewed with the help of Julianna Kovács, Ferenczy prize-winning glass artist and her husband András Szilágyi. In 2004, the building underwent further renovations for the 60th anniversary of the Holocaust. It is rare that the Synagogue still retains its original equipment, the hand-carved benches remain in their original condition. We can see these restored in the synagogue today. In the former Jewish school next to the building there is a Holocaust Memorial Center, and the building also provides space for events alongside religious life.

Fortified Roman Catholic Church – Óföldeák https://palmculture.eu/en/places/romai-katolikus-erodtemplom-ofoldeak/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/romai-katolikus-erodtemplom-ofoldeak/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:52:59 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/romai-katolikus-erodtemplom-ofoldeak/ Óföldeák Árpád-kori eredetű falu, először az 1332/33-as pápai tizedjegyzék említi, eszerint már akkor egyházas hely volt. A ma is álló templom magja valószínűleg a 15. század második felében épült. A település 1950-ben Óföldeák néven önállósult. 1990-99 között Béres Mária vezetésével nagyobb arányú műemléki régészeti kutatásokra került sor, majd következett a helyreállítás, állagmegóvás. Az üvegablakokat Szilágyi András tervei alapján pótolták.

Ópusztaszer National Heritage Park https://palmculture.eu/en/places/opusztaszeri-nemzeti-torteneti-emlekpark/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/opusztaszeri-nemzeti-torteneti-emlekpark/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:46:04 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/opusztaszeri-nemzeti-torteneti-emlekpark/ The National Heritage Park is an open-air ethnographic museum, a skanzen and excursion site, which was established in 1982 in Ópusztaszer, Csongrád County. Its best-known exhibition is Árpád Feszty’s panorama painting titled The arrival of the Hungarians in the Rotunda. In making the 120 meter long, 15 meter high panoramic scene with a 38 meter diameter, Árpád Feszty was assisted by several painters for two years, from 1892 to 1894: landscape details were created by László Mednyánszky, the horse battle scenes by Pál Vágó. In 2013, discovered parts of the 1897 Polish-owned Transylvanian panorama were also exhibited. The Open-Air Ethnographic Collection has 19 building complexes and three open-air exhibitions, its design began in 1978 and continues to evolve ever since. The buildings represent the different regions of the country, the visitor can observe the life of the 19th century villages and farmsteads, the various crafts, see the school, the post office, the grocery store, the windmill, the narrow-gauge railway, the bakery. Here you can also see a collection of carts and a collection of agricultural machines. The larch pavilion resembling a yurt houses the Forest and Man exhibition, presenting the relationship between forest, trees and man. The nomadic park evokes the world of Eurasian steppes, with yurt and winter accommodations, horse shows. The Water Exhibition commemorates rafting, wood processing, shipbuilding and fishing. With the help of a model, we can witness the great flood of 1879 in Szeged. There are several monuments in the park, as well as a forest trail, a forest pitch and playgrounds also await discovery.

Heroes’ Gate https://palmculture.eu/en/places/hosok-kapuja/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/hosok-kapuja/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 19:40:16 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/hosok-kapuja/ The Heroes’ Gate (Porta Heroum) was originally built as a city gate for those arriving by rail in 1936, based on the ideas of Klebelsberg Kuno. There building has three arched gates on four pillars over Boldogasszony Avenue. Based on the idea of the mayor of that time, it became the Heroes’ Gate, commemorating 12,000 soldiers of Szeged. The neoclassical gate was designed by Móric Pogány, and the army statues on both sides were created by Éva Lőte. The arches of the gate are decorated with frescoes by Vilmos Aba Novák. Europe’s largest outdoor fresco is grouped around three themes: war remembrence, praise for the heroic dead and Miklós Horthy’s departure from Szeged. In the middle of the work is a picture of Christ spanning 8 meters, turned towards Aradi Vértanúk tere (Arad’s Martyrs’ Square). For more than fifty years, the artwork was hidden from the eyes of the observers, for the first time, in 1945, only Horthy’s figure, and then four years later all of them were blinded. As a result of several years of restoration work, the original state was restored by August 2000. Aba Novák Vilmos painted the allegory of Faith on one side of the gate, and the theme for the other side is The Action.

He has designed sets for several Hungarian plays, operas, open-air performances and several Hungarian films. He had been designing sets for the Open-Air Festival of Szeged since 1932. He was familiar with the scenic challenges of incorporating the towers of the Votive Church in a theatrical set, and many artists consider him to be their master. He began to be concerned with ceramics at the age of 60, which also exhibits his interest in theater. The museum named after him opened on August 1, 1987. The artist himself had bought the building and renovated it with the help of Ybl Award laureate architect István Tarnai. He has given the building the Ferenc Móra Museum of Szeged, who are still operating the museum. The museum showcases its material on 300 m2, and is opened between April 1 and September 30, on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 3 PM and 7 PM, during the winter, further contact is required. There is no entrance fee, the programs and guided tours are free.

Traditional Rural House Museum https://palmculture.eu/en/places/napsugaras-tajhaz/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/napsugaras-tajhaz/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 18:32:03 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/napsugaras-tajhaz/ The God’s Eye motive of the main altar in the Alsóvárosi Church (Lower Town Church), the radial lines, became recognizable ornaments of the houses in lower town. The triangle gable of the „sunshine houses” represent the Holy Trinity for religious families. Sándor Bálint (1904-1980), born in Alsóváros (Lower Town), was a university professor, excellent researcher of the ethnography and cultural history of Szeged. He studied the religious customs and believes of the people living in Szeged and its surroundings. The renovated „sunshine house” gives place for the exhibition on the life of the Southern Great Plain and the consumer goods of the period between the two World Wars. Besides the permanent exhibition the events presenting folk customs in relation with different holidays offer unique programs for visitors.

Museum and Treasury of the Diocese https://palmculture.eu/en/places/egyhazmegyei-muzeum-es-kincstar/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/egyhazmegyei-muzeum-es-kincstar/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 18:27:17 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/egyhazmegyei-muzeum-es-kincstar/ The Museum of the Diocese was opened at the Bishop’s Palace on Dóm Square, on June 29, 1995. Such an institution was operating before in the interwar period at the Szeged Franciscan Church, which was visited frequently by worshippers and pilgrims from all around the region. After the dissolution of Catholic orders in 1950, the museum was closed, and its collection, along with its invaluable library, was stored in an unknown place. Urged on by the Szeged-based folklorist Sándor Bálint, efforts were made in the 1970s and 1980s to reopen the museum, which has finally happened in 1988. The basement of the former St. Imre Dormitory provided an ideal place for the collection, which was put together and sorted with the invaluable help of professionals from the Ferenc Móra Museum. The collection was first put on display in the Museum’s Black House, and later transferred to the new, 100m2 space of the Museum of the Diocese.
