The separate little house on the building’s yard is a rarity of architectural and cultural history. At the turn of the century, before the spread of electricity, artists utilized sunlight to have enough light for their photographic endeavors. This studio is among the very rare examples that have been preserved, besides the Mai Manó House in Budapest and the Fényirda in Szentes. The unique glass building is shielded by the walls of Popper-house, designed by Nándor Jiraszek, using former plans by Ödön Lechner, and enjoys a special status by the state authorities concerned with monument protection. Today, Popper-house is home to a craft beerhouse (Napfény Műterem), but the studio itself is currently closed to the public.

The first data referring to the church is in a 1334 papal tithe listing, so it is probably the most precious, medieval monument of the Southern Great Plain. We are still not sure of the origins of these rotundas, the cause of their construction, their purpose, the identity, motivation and intention of their builders. There are three such churches in Europe, all in Hungary. They are similar ones only in the Caucasus. Behind the six-arm mapping, some seek sacred content, while others consider it a simple decorative tool. What we can surely know is that, in contrast to the established templates of contemporary temple building, builders have built a particularly eastern, Byzantine-style building, which had a Byzantine double cross at the top until the 19th century. Its uniqueness, besides its form, are the delicate frescoes and the gracefully tall half-columns decorated with life-tree motives. The rotunda was not destroyed by the Turks but used as a bath and a stable. The Circle Church was separated between 1980 and 1983 from the neo-Roman Catholic church built next to it in 1910. Presumably built at the beginning of the 13th century, The Circle Church, decorated with frescoes from 13th-14th century, after several centuries of rebuilding now welcomes visitors in its original condition.

In 1882-1883, it was expanded to the west in its original style. In the rebuilding of 1897, the bell tower decorating the building was demolished. This is when it got the name Old High School, due to the construction of the new high school building. In the 1960s, the idea of building a stand-alone gallery for the wide-ranging exhibition of fine art in the region of Vásárhely and the Great Plain emerged. The Alföld Gallery was opened to the public on September 30, 1985 in the renovated upstairs chambers, empty since the end of the 1970s. The ground floor rooms were opened in 2003 by the city during the 50th Vásárhely Autumn Exhibition. Since 2006, the whole building has been serving the purpose of the Gallery. The art exhibition of the Great Plain was opened in 2013 in the upstairs halls of the Alföldi Gallery from the very beginning.

Hajdú Bálint volt, ebben az Andrássy úti emeletes épületben alakították ki az Emlékpontot. Az épület korában különböző állami tanácsoknak adott otthont, majd 1974-ig, kiürítéséig iskolaként működött. A 2006-ban megnyílt múzeum alapvető feladata az 1945 és 1990 közötti időszak részletes bemutatása Hódmezővásárhelyen és környékén. Egy 2005-ben meghirdetett felhívásra rengeteg anyag gyűlt össze az időszakról, így Magyarország első Emlékpontja állandó kiállítás keretében, a legkorszerűbb kiállítási technológiákkal és múzeumpedagógiai lehetőségekkel élve teszi kézzelfoghatóvá azokat a történelmi folyamatokat, amelyek Hódmezővásárhelyt és lakóit érték az elmúlt ötven esztendőben. A kor szemtanúival készített több száz beszélgetés került be a kiállítási anyagba, arról, hogy hogyan változott meg életük a szocializmus alatt. A kiállítást, hódmezővásárhelyi levéltárosok, helytörténészek aktív közreműködésével, a Terror Háza Múzeum munkatársai alkották. Az összes anyag összegyűltével és az épület műszaki átadásával 2006 júliusában nyílt meg a múzeum.

Until its nationalization is 1948, it operated as a denominational school. The former Jewish school was occupied by the Israelite religious church, and was used as a sermon room. In 2004, in parallel with the synagogue, the former school building was renovated, based on the plans of Attila F. Kovács. Hungary’s first permanent Holocaust exhibition in the country opened its doors on June 27, 2004. The exhibition commemorates the victims of Nazi genocide: the people the city lost during the labor service, in the concentration camps and in Auschwitz. The time of the synagogue stands at 10 hours and 10 minutes until today, marking the exact time the city’s 737 Jewish citizens were taken away. The research has a record of 470 Jewish martyrs, a quarter of whom were younger than 24 years old, so there is a separate exhibition dedicated to child victims. Visitors can see the survivors’ recollections while the exhibition also reminds us of the actions of those who have been helping the victims in the darkest hours of our history.

Janáky István 1949-ben a csak két évig létezett magyar modernizmus jegyében készült tervei alapján kezdték el építeni Hódmezővásárhelyen, az egykori görögkeleti iskola épülete helyén, a főtértől nem messze. Az épületet 1953-ban adták át, tervezője még ebben az évben Ybl Miklós- díjat kapott. Az aula falán látható freskót Németh József készítette 1962-63 körül. Első változata arany hátterű, mondai jelenetet ábrázoló kép volt, melyen ledér öltözetű nőalakok szerepeltek. A politikai vezetés erkölcstelennek titulálta a festményt, ezért új készült szocialista realista stílusban, ami már megfelelt a kor elvárásainak. Az intézmény fél évszázadon keresztül sikerrel látta el a város közművelődési feladatát. Az épületet 2008-ban műemléki védettség alá helyezték A 2010-2012 között lezajlott felújítást a tervező fiai vitték véghez, ifj. Janáky István és György. A megújult, 353 férőhelyes terem méltó helyszíne a színházi előadásoknak, akusztikája miatt kitűnő koncertterem és konferenciáknak is otthont adó többfunkciós térré vált.

Naturally, in the first few years private houses doubled as sites of the ceremonies, but as the number of families grew, the need for a larger prayer house became apparent in the community. The first synagogue was built in 1834 by a house purchased from lawyer Sámuel Matók. In 1839, they also bought the neighboring plot where the school and the ritual bath were arranged. In the 1850s demand for a larger synagogue surfaced. Based on the works received for a design competition, Miklós Busch, master builder of Szentes, was commissioned to carry out design tasks. The facade of a synagogue, built in 1857 in a romantic style, was similar to a multi-storey house, so as not to look like a Christian church on the outside. During the period until the turn of the century, the number of Jews in Hódmezővásárhely increased tenfold. The city was at its golden age, with a significantly increased number of Jews, who had been strengthened economically, and who felt the time to build a new, more impressive synagogue had come. According to the first ideas, a completely new prayer house would have been created instead of the old one, but the designs received in 1906 did not appeal to the members of the jury. Finally, Miksa Müller was commissioned with preparing the plans for the reconstruction of the building. The most significant change during the reconstruction between 1906 and 1908 was the creation of the new main facade. The main facade, which is eclectic, but mostly composed of Art Nouveau decorations, gives the building a central effect. In fact, the facade bearing Moorish elements is a huge gate building that includes the foyer, along with the triple entrance. On 16 June 1944, the deportation of Jews from the city to Auschwitz and Strasshof began. Only five out of Auschwitz returned to Hódmezővásárhely. The synagogue was bought by the city from the community in 1984. Large scale renovations started in 1989, when the ornate glass windows, which were almost completely destroyed in the meantime, were renewed with the help of Julianna Kovács, Ferenczy prize-winning glass artist and her husband András Szilágyi. In 2004, the building underwent further renovations for the 60th anniversary of the Holocaust. It is rare that the Synagogue still retains its original equipment, the hand-carved benches remain in their original condition. We can see these restored in the synagogue today. In the former Jewish school next to the building there is a Holocaust Memorial Center, and the building also provides space for events alongside religious life.

In the area of Vásárhely, during the initial period of the Reformation, the Lutheran line was in the majority, but from 1569 the cityhad a Calvinist pastor. During the Turkish occupation, the use of solid building materials was forbidden for defense reasons, so a church built of mud and wood served at the Reformed Church in Vásárhely. After the Turkish rule, the tower of the Reformed Church was built in 1713, making it the oldest brick building in the city. The Baroque-style nave was built between 1721 and 1723 in accordance with the architectural design of the tower, and was executed by János Hölbing, a builder from Buda. Although the furnishings and religious objects of the church had been removed earlier, the 2012 renovation made it possible to collect them and restore them to their original condition. Thus, the 18th century painted, wooden panel facade and ceiling, the pulpit crown, the priest’s bench and several artifacts returned after 113 years. Recently, it has been completely renovated.

Although several churches were erected using pise in the decades following the Turkish occupation, they became destroyed. Their first solid brick church was built between 1752 and 1758 in Baroque style. After more Catholics settled in the city in 1860, transepts were added according to the plans of Miklós Ybl. Above the main entrance is the coat of arms of the Count Károlyi family. Today’s main altar was bought in 1873 at the Vienna World Expo. The original Trinity image was restored in 1954. The painted statues of Saint Stephen and Saint Imre were created by János Inzám. The church’s attractions include the two confessional booths mad from scrubbed oak wood, and Johannes Lieberich’s masterpieces, the early Louis Seize style silver navicula and incense from 1803. The 18th century candleholders are made of gilded hardwood. The liturgical layout was created in 1967, the exterior and interior restoration took place in 1975 and 1978.

In 1898, the municipality decided that after the demolition of the nearly 70-year-old restaurant, it would build an even larger hotel-café complex. Although 15 plans were submitted for the first call for proposals, none were judged to be suitable for execution, so a new, narrower tender took place, now with 5 participants. The winner of this was Gyula Pártos, who was appointed in 1903 to design the hotel-café. In December 1905, the building was handed over for use, which had to be partly rebuilt after a fire in 1914. The exterior of the building is eclectic, mainly with neo-baroque and rococo elements. The stuccos featured fine ornamentation and plant decorations. In its original layout, beside the hotel rooms it included a restaurant, a café, a taproom and a beer hall. On the upper floor, an imposing large hall was created, with remarkable interior space,theatre boxes and stage represented remarkable architectural performance and was mainly used for balls. The newly built hotel was named Fekete Sas (Black Eagle), and a signifying bird sculpture was placed on the eastern facade of the building. In the fifties, the eagle said to represent the Habsburg power was removed by the authorities, and the name was changed to the Béke (Peace) Hotel, but by 1986 it got its original name back. Renovated in the late 1980s, with the participation of János Fekete the renovated eagle ornament was restored in 1991 to its original location. The Fekete Sas Hotel gained back its old splendor in 1998, opening its doors again in a beautifully renovated form.
