Sunlight Studio https://palmculture.eu/en/places/napfeny-muterem/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/napfeny-muterem/#respond Tue, 22 Jan 2019 15:36:00 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/napfeny-muterem/ The Sunlight Studio, a popular photography studio at the time, was opened in 1892, and it is still preserved in its original form. The separate little house on the building’s yard is a rarity of architectural and cultural history. At the turn of the century, before the spread of electricity, artists utilized sunlight to have enough light for their photographic endeavors. This studio is among the very rare examples that have been preserved, besides the Mai Manó House in Budapest and the Fényirda in Szentes. The unique glass building is shielded by the walls of Popper-house, designed by Nándor Jiraszek, using former plans by Ödön Lechner, and enjoys a special status by the state authorities concerned with monument protection. Today, Popper-house is home to a craft beerhouse (Napfény Műterem), but the studio itself is currently closed to the public.

Reformatory Church https://palmculture.eu/en/places/reformatorska-crkva/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/reformatorska-crkva/#respond Sun, 20 Jan 2019 15:06:39 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/reformatorska-crkva/ The first reformatory church in Novi Sad was located in the house in today’s Turgenjeva Street, which Istvan Kun donated to the reformatory religious community in 1808. The first Reformed believers in Novi Sad were mostly of Hungarian origin and moved from Erdel. The decision to build a new church was made in 1839, but the project documentation was completed only in 1861. The project is signed by Georg Molnar, one of the more prominent city architects in the second half of the nineteenth century. The construction of the church was completed in 1865. The church has characteristics of neo-gothic style. Inside there is an organ from 1890.

The word paprika was developed in the Szeged region, but it is known and used by many languages. The aim of the exhibition is to commemorate the families of paprika families around Szeged who have created the reputation of the Hungarian paprika. Nandafalva Hindu Temple – Balástya https://palmculture.eu/en/places/nandafalva-hindu-templom-balastya/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/nandafalva-hindu-templom-balastya/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:09:11 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/nandafalva-hindu-templom-balastya/ The Nandafalva Hindu community was created in 1979 by some young people dedicated to ancient Hindu teachings in the farmstead of Balástya. Nandafalva was named after the Indian holy place, Nandagram. After more than twenty years of activity, the Hindu Temple was built in 2000. Based on the plans of architect Gyula Szigeti, a fusion of Hungarian and Hindu architectural features can be discovered, and the porch that evokes the buildings of the Great Plain encircles a tile-decorated Orissa tower. The traditional church architecture that is still alive in India does not shy away from blending the architecture of different regions. There is a hundredweight bell in the tower of the church, which follows the Hungarian tradition by being rung daily. The church is surrounded by red sandstone carvings, and the temple sanctuary depicts the most important figures of the Hindu pantheon. One of the monumental elements is the two-ton Humble Column, which is two meters high and carved from a stone. In 2013, on an open day, a cassette ceiling and a fresco were added, which took almost a year to finish. The fresco made by the painter Barbara Krasznai depicts the most important figures of the Hindu religion, the avatars.

Cellar Museum – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/pincemuzeum-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/pincemuzeum-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:08:03 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/pincemuzeum-hodmezovasarhely/ In 2003, the Museum of Old Peasant Tools was opened, located in the cellar of the Agrárcentrum’s Petőfi Street building. Creators of the permanent exhibition planned to create a small museum that introduces accessories of peasant life. The city administration supported their idea, renovated the cellar, and the old bricks on the floor were also provided by the city. The exhibition was compiled by Vera Nagy, the chief museologist of Tornyai János Museum, with Nándor Nagy, a restorer, also contributing to the work. Ninety percent of the objects come from the private collection of János Perényi, the rest being made available to the museum by the members of the association. Here we can see corn crushers, carrot-cutters, sprayers, shredders, and various hand tools, but there are also some accessories for winemaking and pig slaying.

Alföldi Gallery (Old High School) – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/alfoldi-galeria-ogimnazium-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/alfoldi-galeria-ogimnazium-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:07:10 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/alfoldi-galeria-ogimnazium-hodmezovasarhely/ The building the Alföldi Galéria currently occupies is the classicist building of the former Reformed High School. In 1882-1883, it was expanded to the west in its original style. In the rebuilding of 1897, the bell tower decorating the building was demolished. This is when it got the name Old High School, due to the construction of the new high school building. In the 1960s, the idea of building a stand-alone gallery for the wide-ranging exhibition of fine art in the region of Vásárhely and the Great Plain emerged. The Alföld Gallery was opened to the public on September 30, 1985 in the renovated upstairs chambers, empty since the end of the 1970s. The ground floor rooms were opened in 2003 by the city during the 50th Vásárhely Autumn Exhibition. Since 2006, the whole building has been serving the purpose of the Gallery. The art exhibition of the Great Plain was opened in 2013 in the upstairs halls of the Alföldi Gallery from the very beginning.

Point of Remembrance – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/emlekpont-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/emlekpont-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:06:18 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/emlekpont-hodmezovasarhely/ Az 1924-ben épült épület eredeti építtetője és tulajdonosa ifj. A kiállítást, hódmezővásárhelyi levéltárosok, helytörténészek aktív közreműködésével, a Terror Háza Múzeum munkatársai alkották. Az összes anyag összegyűltével és az épület műszaki átadásával 2006 júliusában nyílt meg a múzeum.

Until its nationalization is 1948, it operated as a denominational school. The former Jewish school was occupied by the Israelite religious church, and was used as a sermon room. In 2004, in parallel with the synagogue, the former school building was renovated, based on the plans of Attila F. Kovács. Hungary’s first permanent Holocaust exhibition in the country opened its doors on June 27, 2004. The exhibition commemorates the victims of Nazi genocide: the people the city lost during the labor service, in the concentration camps and in Auschwitz. The time of the synagogue stands at 10 hours and 10 minutes until today, marking the exact time the city’s 737 Jewish citizens were taken away. The research has a record of 470 Jewish martyrs, a quarter of whom were younger than 24 years old, so there is a separate exhibition dedicated to child victims. Visitors can see the survivors’ recollections while the exhibition also reminds us of the actions of those who have been helping the victims in the darkest hours of our history.

János Tornyai Museum – Hódmezővásárhely https://palmculture.eu/en/places/tornyai-janos-muzeum-hodmezovasarhely/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/tornyai-janos-muzeum-hodmezovasarhely/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 20:01:38 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/tornyai-janos-muzeum-hodmezovasarhely/ The history of János Tornyai Museum goes back more than a hundred years, and it presents extremely rich archeological, ethnographic, local history, art and craft works of Hódmezővásárhely and its area. The city council of Hódmezővásárhely decided to establish the museum in 1905. Today’s museum buiéding was purchased from state aid in 1914, but it housed several institutions, and the museum became an independent institution only in 1946. In 1951 it took the name of one of the most prominent artists of Hódmezővásárhely, János Tornyai. In 2007, the Tornyai János Museum and Cultural Center, the public collection, public education and library organization of the city was established. Its headquarters is the János Tornyai Museum, and is maintained by the Municipality of Hódmezővásárhely. The museum also houses several permanent exhibitions. The permanent archaeological exhibition, Everyday Venuses takes us back to the everyday life of the man of the Neolithic. The exhibition focuses on three main topics: the life of a Neolithic village, the beliefs of the Tisza culture, and the late Neolithic bulrush and textile industry. In addition to the archaeological exhibition, a permanent exhibition of urban history, called Centuries on the shore of Hód Lake – From Houd to Újváros, opened in December 2018. The exhibition shows the development of the settlement from the age of Árpád to the fire of Kis Street, which destroyed over 1,000 houses. In addition to the archaeological finds and reconstructions exhibited, digital devices are also used to discover the history of Hódmezővásárhely. The ethnographic part of the exhibition also gives an idea of the development of the farm system around the city. Part of the permanent exhibitions is the Spectacle Warehouse, which features more than 1,500 archaeological, local history, ethnography, and fine art materials, located in the basement level of the museum. In the fifty-two showcases, only 1% of the museum’s entire collection is lined up in chronological, periodical, and object groups.
