The project was made by architects Yuri Nikolaevich Shreter and Konstantin Petrovich Paris de la Valet, who emigrated from Russia after the October Revolution. The facade is made in Neo-Romantic style and is one of the most interesting in the old core of Novi Sad. As an inspiration, architects used medieval architecture, and with its concept, the building resembles the gothic and early renaissance Venetian palaces.

University of Szeged – Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szte-bolcseszet-es-tarsadalomtudomanyi-kar/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/szte-bolcseszet-es-tarsadalomtudomanyi-kar/#respond Tue, 07 May 2019 10:26:15 +0000 http://palmculture.eu/places/szte-bolcseszet-es-tarsadalomtudomanyi-kar/ The neo-Romanesque style building is a one of the most prominent features of the city of Szeged, which has been home to the University of Cluj, which has fled to Szeged in 1925, and its current successor, the University of Szeged.

For the design of the building, a tender was opened in 1911, which was open only to architects living in Szeged. The criterion of the tender determined that the building should have “serious” style features, the Art Nouveau style was to be ignored. Nine entries were submitted for the competition, the first prize of which was won by a plan from architects’ István Ottovay and Imre Winkler. Béla Ligeti was responsible for the construction work. The construction began on July 13, 1911, and the building was completed at a staggered pace of work in one year on August 1, 1912. In the course of landscaping, the entire natural lake previously occupying the site has been filled up, with the József Attila Science and Information Center standing in its place now.

In 1925, the Faculty of Humanities occupied the third floor of the building. The Geographic Institute took over part of the first floor. On the ground floor, the Institute of Zootaxy and the Dental Clinic were located. The corridors of the building have not always been filled with bustling student life, their original owner was the Hungarian Railway, relocated to Szeged in 1887, which had hundreds of employees.

Sándor Sík held his literary history lectures in the Great Hall of the Faculty of Humanities between 1930 and 1944. At the same time several famous Hungarian writers spoke to their numerous audience, including Gyula Illyés, László Németh and Péter Veres. Another famous student of the Faculty of Humanities was Miklós Radnóti, a distinguished poet between 1930 and 1935.

Jazz Kocsma https://palmculture.eu/en/places/jazz-kocsma/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/jazz-kocsma/#respond Wed, 23 Jan 2019 16:11:40 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/?post_type=places&p=5874 At the time of its opening in 1992, the Jazz Kocsma was one of the forerunners of the new-minded, typically underground music institutions. With regular live music, a Mexican cuisine that was then a novelty and the good company soon made it a venue for many. Over the years, a slow but persistent process of transformation started, which did not necessarily was of advantage to the place. The change of ownership in 2008 put the small pub back on the live music map. Around a hundred concerts a year are organized in the club filled with old furnishings, and in summer there is also a garden waiting for the fans of the alternative genres, among which jazz dominates, but metal, folk and electronics comfortably fit in here as well. Animal friendly place.

Sunlight Studio https://palmculture.eu/en/places/napfeny-muterem/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/napfeny-muterem/#respond Tue, 22 Jan 2019 15:36:00 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/napfeny-muterem/ The Sunlight Studio, a popular photography studio at the time, was opened in 1892, and it is still preserved in its original form. The separate little house on the building’s yard is a rarity of architectural and cultural history. At the turn of the century, before the spread of electricity, artists utilized sunlight to have enough light for their photographic endeavors. This studio is among the very rare examples that have been preserved, besides the Mai Manó House in Budapest and the Fényirda in Szentes. The unique glass building is shielded by the walls of Popper-house, designed by Nándor Jiraszek, using former plans by Ödön Lechner, and enjoys a special status by the state authorities concerned with monument protection. Today, Popper-house is home to a craft beerhouse (Napfény Műterem), but the studio itself is currently closed to the public.

The dark brown main altar is a real winged altar, evoking the Middle Ages.

Complex of former factory Petar Drapsin – “China Quarter” https://palmculture.eu/en/places/kompleks-bivse-fabrike-petar-drapsin-kineska-cetvrt/ https://palmculture.eu/en/places/kompleks-bivse-fabrike-petar-drapsin-kineska-cetvrt/#respond Sun, 20 Jan 2019 15:18:27 +0000 https://www.palmculture.eu/places/kompleks-bivse-fabrike-petar-drapsin-kineska-cetvrt/ The “Chinese Quarter” is part of Novi Sad, located between the Liman Park and the Danube Quay. The factory “Petar Drapsin” once functioned at this location. The beginning of the Industrial district dates back to 1921, when the sale of land at Liman was approved to Kramer Brothers, for the construction of a wire factory and apartments for workers, and to the Office for Foreign Trade of the Czechoslovak Republic for construction of the Warehouse. After the Second World War, the factory “Petar Drapsin” operated here, until 1974 when it had moved to a new location. Subsequently this part of the city gradually became decrepit and deserted. Student Cultural Center Novi Sad uses part of the space for concerts, performances and other events. The revitalization of this quarter is under way in preparation for 2021, when Novi Sad will take the title of the European Capital of Culture.
