The gallery, operated by the NKM National Utilities Ltd. is located on Klauzál Square, in the beautiful building of the former Hotel Európa, designed by M. Krausz and Alajos Posz, whose names are exhibited on the frontage. The former Hotel was frequented by artists, musicians, and literary figures such as Gyula Juhász, István Tömörkény, and Fausztin Palotás, and was an organic part of life in Szeged. The 30-room hotel, with its restaurant and café, was closed in 1930. The building was later occupied by the Southern-Hungary Electrical Ltd., who have opened DÉMÁSZ Gallery in 2003, which functions under a different name after the structural changes in the country’s utility companies, but with the same, high-quality exhibitions of works by contemporary artists.
