St. Nicholas Parish and Cloister
Back in 1225, there was already a flourishing abbey where the church is located nowadays, dedicated to St. Nicholas, a patron saint for people working around waters, but it was demolished during the Mongol invasion of Hungary. The second church was built on the ruins by Dominican monks in 1318, who also dedicated the church to St. Nicholas, but this building was also destroyed during the years of the Ottoman Occupation in the 16th century. The third church, that has prevailed and is used today, was built by the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor, who moved to Szeged in 1739. The cloister was finished by 1748, and the church was built between 1754 and 1767. The Classicist main altar, depicting St. Nicholas, was finished by 1806, while the organ was built in 1928 by the Angster organ manufactory in Pécs and fully renovated in 1999. The church was almost completely destroyed in a fire in 1877, but was renovated by 1888, albeit with a much simpler, late Baroque frontage. The church was renovated in 1928, with new columns on the front that highlight the entrance and the artistic main gate of the building. Another renovation took place in 1939, marking the 200th anniversary of the Order’s presence in Szeged, with new frescos by János Bicskei Karle. A new set of reliefs, depicting the Calvary of Jesus, was also placed on the sidewalls. The marble baptismal fountain, built in 1806, was placed in the entrance hall of the church. Some parts of the church were – once again – renovated in 1967, by artists Antal Nemcsics and István Nagy. An L-shaped, two-story Franciscan cloister is also attached to the church, and after a long hiatus, there are once again a thriving order of priests living here, taking care of the church and the spiritual life of worshippers from Northern-Szeged.
