This chapel had several different locations throughout the centuries, which is not unique in Szeged’s history. First, it was built near the where the Szeged Votive Church is located today, after the plague epidemic of 1738, and dedicated on August 1, 1739. The St. Rose Chapel was an important part of the city’s religious life, with an annual indulgence on July 2. Memorial services for deceased people from the farmlands surrounding Szeged were held here, and the Bishop of Csanád also paid regular visits. Great masses of Szeged citizens were paying regular visits during the cholera epidemics of the 19th century. The church was damaged during the Great Flood of 1879, and therefore rebuilt a bit closer to the former St. Dömötör Church between 1881-1883. Meanwhile, a greater number of Greek Catholics came from the eastern parts of Hungary and settled in Szeged, who intended to form an independent church organization, which has happened only in 1921, due to World War I. The newly-founded community was given the right to use the St. Rose Chapel, and has been retaining this right ever since. In 1924, the church was replaced due to the construction of the Votive Church: it was deconstructed, its pieces numbered and completely rebuilt on Lechner Square, where it is located today. Besides the expanded ceiling, the chapel has also received a new nave. It was dedicated on November 17, 1929 by Bishop Gyula Glattfelder. The pilasters and horizontal fugues were lost in the past decades, similarly to the stone vases decorating the frontage of the church. The former seats were replaced with proper pews in 1969, and the entrance was renovated in the 1980s. The building itself was renovated in 1998, while the tower and its roofing were renovated in 2005.
