The current City Hall of Szeged on Széchenyi Square is already the third building in the same area. The first, more modest building was completed in 1728, which has been rebuilt by István Vedres between 1799 and 1805. The National Parliament has accepted the laws regarding the emancipation of Hungarian Jews and other nationalities here, and on August 5, General Haynau was observing the Battle of Szőreg from its tower, when a cannon ball hit the tower. The City Hall survived the Great Flood of 1879, but mit was damaged, so a renovation and extension took place in 1883, led by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos, who added eclectic, Neo-Baroque stylistic elements to the building.
The stairway features three lead glass windows, done by Ede Kratzmann, with the central one featuring the city’s shield, with the royal motto “Szeged will be more beautiful than before”, a popular saying after the Great Flood. The building’s tower has been compared to a “flirty, dainty dancer” by the Hungarian poet Mihály Babits. The tower’s bell features popular melodies every hour. The City Hall and the Csongrád County Archives are connected with the “Bridge of Sighs”, modelled after the one in Venice, Italy. The bridge was built when King Franz Joseph visited the city, and urban legend has it that the name refers to the sighs of the citizens of Szeged, who crossed the bridge to visit the Tax Office that was located here at the time.
