Mezei-Márkos Duo ★ Grand Café Szeged

Viola and cello make for a magnificent combination, this duo celebrating a wedding typified by present-day romanticism and witty improvisational options. The subdivision of “Korom” in diminutive sections (down to 19 seconds) comprised between the longer pieces beginning and ending the album attributes an inner symmetry to the whole configuration, a welcome addition to an already exquisite experience. The players investigate singular aspects of sonic free will with self control and moderation, absolutely not afraid of letting the horses go every once in a while. What starts like an almost regretful look to far-flung temporal landscapes often turns into a restless consecutiveness of calls and responses, the “scrape, scratch and pluck” factor gaining considerable weight over the course of the set. Yet the most striking attributes of this music reside in the artists’ quest for extrapolating newness from unplanned sketches and designs which, at the same time, seem to have been conceived a hundred years ago, such is the magic aura of improbability and secluded grief that these phrases originate in the soul of the sensitive listener. There’s not a moment in which we were caught unprepared by this unpretentious splendor. A seriously involving record, the unforeseen gift from two musicians whose curricula are definitely impressive (check them and remain in awe, especially in reference to Mezei’s) yet still worthy of being exposed to bigger and bigger audiences.

Szilard Mezei

Composer, violist, improviser. Born 1974 in Senta, Serbia (then Yugoslavia) as a member of the Hungarian minority in the multiethnic region of Vojvodina. Completed his violin studies in Senta and Subotica and studied composition for four years at the University of Arts (Music Academy) in Belgrade under prof. Zoran Eric.
His orchestra plays contemporary improvised music, mostly performing his own compositions. As a composer, Mezei is interested in exploring the relationship between improvisation and composition (similarly to Witold Lutoslawski’s aleatoric and Anthony Braxton’s creative music methods), incorporating elements of jazz and authentic folk music as well. As a young musician he followed the path of B.Bartók and Gy.Szabados. Mezei is also very actively involved in composing scenic music (among others with Josef Nadj). He have more than 30 CD an LP releases of His music at international labels like Leo Records, Not Two, Creative Sources, Red Toucan, Ayler Records, Slam Productions, Odradek Records. Played so far with musicians/improvisors like Matthias Schubert, Róbert Benkő, György Szabados, Tim Hodgkinson, Albert Márkos, Peter Ole Jörgensen, Jens Balder, Joe Fonda, Michael Jefry Stevens, Joelle Leandre, Hamid Drake, Herb Robertson, Frank Gratkowski, Charles Gayle, Sten Sandell, Joel Grip, Nicola Guazzaloca. He had more then 200 compositions for various ensembles.
He is active in theater-music also, and two times won the most important theater prize „Sterija”, and many prizes for theater-music.
His writings on music were published in many periodicals in Former-Yugoslavia and Hungary.

I was born in 1967 in Kolozsvár, (Klausenburg, Cluj) Romania, where I studied at the Music Secondary School and the Music Academy (the latter uncompleted)
From 1993 to 1997 I have studied in THE DHARMA GATE BUDDHIST COLLEGE – BUDAPEST

Between 1988 and 1992 I worked in the following orchestras in Transylvania:
The Philharmonic Orchestra of Marosvásárhely (Neumarkt, Tirgu Mures)
The Symphonic Orchestra of Kolozsvár
Concordia Chamber Orchestra of Kolozsvár

In 1992 I moved away from classical music, and since then I have tried to find
new goals for my work as a performer and a composer.

Since 1993 I have lived in Budapest, pursuing a career as
a composer for theatre, film and dance productions.

My main interest in music as a player and listener is on free improvised music.

I was a member of the Tilos Rádió – Budapest and music program organiser of MU Theatre, Budapest.

I am a member of the currently active performing groups: ARGO, Mezei-Márkos duo, Gratkowski-Mezei-Márkos-Blume quartet, Pont Workshop, Tractus, and leader of Budbudas and W.H.
