The Onion House, which also houses a theater, is the cultural center of Makó. Originally built in a modernist style in 1936, it was the headquarters and sales center of the onion famers, and it housed commodity and association chambers. In 1947, the reorganized onion association called for the building to be returned to their use, which they were granted in October 1949, on the condition that the function of the building will be a theater and culture house. After the restructuring, the Onion House, now exclusively culture-oriented, was opened with a guest play from the Szeged National Theater. The institution, adopting the name of Attila József, was officially used for theater and culture, but their work was hampered by a lack of finances, inadequate material conditions and the limited scope of the institution. By the end of the 1980s, the buildigs outdatedness became obvious. Since it was not originally built as a cultural house, the basic service and social facilities were also missing. In 1996, the Hungarian government called a tender for the renewal of cultural institutions catering for regional needs but became dangerous, which Makó won, and the design of the new Onion House was drawn by Imre Makovecz. The building ceremoniously opened on 2 October, 1998, with the Makó dance groups, brass bands, acting circles, artists from the city, and the orchestra of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music performing at the ceremony. Since 2006 the Onion House also has a mobile auditorium for the square in front of the open-air stage, which is the second largest of its kind in Csongrád County, capable of accommodating 3000 people. The building needed renovation just after nine years, in November 2007, with new tiles being placed in place for the older ones, and the walls renovated.
