The Serbian Orthodox church in Szeged, dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra, is among the oldest Baroque buildings of Szeged. St. Nicholas, the bishop of Myra, is a patron saint for merchants, which was the occupation of the majority of Serbs in the 18. century. Most of the church was built between 1773 and 1781, and is a great example of the rich past of Serbs in Hungary. The Baroque-style exterior bears a few marks of the already trending Classicist period. The single-nave church has a bell tower that is different in style from similar churches. The foundations are divided in three parts, with a rectangle-shaped altar on the eastern and a characteristic, concave-shaped frontage on the western side. The church was severely damaged in the Great Flood of 1879, and was renovated in 1880-1881. A ceiling fresco titled “Creation of the World” was also added, painted by the Slovak artist Jan Hodina. The church once had 5 separate bells, but these were – besides the greatest of them – destroyed in a storm in the 1820s. The congregation has donated enough money that the church was able to buy 4 new bells, but these were – along with the old, major one – confiscated and melted for military purposes in 1915. For 90 years, the church had no bells whatsoever, but they were able to purchase one with aids from private donators and the city of Szeged.
